Question about 'spelled'

Hi Everyone,

I have a book on common word misspellings, and am looking at the entry on - spelled or spelt?

I'm confused about one sentence, which is:

'...When spell is used in the sense of "give a rest to", the past tense is spelled.'

Does anyone know what this means?

Miss confused.
Emotion: it wasnt me

Thanks.

It seems to be talking about the verbal meaning at section 3 here: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/spell#nav3

tamguatlayBut there is nothing to say that the past tense is "spelled".
This dictionary doesn't bother to list the verb parts when they are regular. So, the fact that nothing is stated (unlike in the first section wheer "spelt" is mentioned) implies that the past tense is "spelled".

He spelled me for a short time.

It is a rare meaning of the word "spell." He took over doing my job so that I could rest.

Here is another example from fraze.it

Kevin Poulin spelled him for the remainder of the contest and registered 19 saves.

It's a completely different verb, and it has a different past tense. That's all.

Compare: lie - lied - lied and lie - lay - lain.

Hi fivejedjon,

I don't understand the above. What has got to do with "spell"?

Like 'spell', the verb 'lie' has different meanings and different past tenses.

It is not stated in the dictionary I quoted from that the past tense of "spell" meaning give a rest to should be "spelled". "spelled" can be used for all the definitions of the verb. As "spelt" is also the past tense of "spell", it is also correct. In other words, to me, either word can be used.

I suggest Cup cake tells us the title of the book and its writer.
