Question about siege....;;;

What would you rather say? 'lay siege to' or 'lay siege on'??

I'm pretty sure they are both correct (am I wrong?) but there must be a more commonly used expression between the two...

One more thing, is this sentence grammatically sound? "We must help the 1st platoon which has been layed siege on"

Thanx a lot ^^
