Question about sentences

Dear all,

One of my friends, who is an English teacher told me the sentence "If you were more careful, you would be able to avoid accidents" is wrong. He says "able" is an adjective here. It doesn't use with "would be" and added it uses only with different forms of "be". But I feel that the above sentence is correct. I would like to get your valuable opinion on this.

Thank you.

Why shouldn't you be able to say it? It looks fine to me. " "Able" is an adjective.

"Would be able" can also be freely used in ability questions, as in "Would you be able to come on Monday?", regarded as a more polite form of "Will you be able to come on Monday?"
