Question about sentences

Dear all,

Recently I gave a pricy wrist watch to one of my friends as birthday gift. When I gave it to him, he curiously take it in his hand and examined it. At that time I asked him "Do you like the watch?". At once another friend of mine that came with me advised me that I should have said "Did you like the watch?". I would like to know which is the appropriate expression on that "particular time".

Thank you.

In that context, "Do you like the watch?" (or in reality more likely "Do you like it?") would be the usual thing to say.
