Question about sentences

Dear all,

I would like to know whether the following sentence is grammatical. I have taken this sentence from the writing of a distinguished person. I personally feel that "have been" is apt here as the word "today" appears here and also "had been" is possible only as the "past of past". Please enlighten me on this.

"Today I had been to the Park Centre for a function".

Thank you.

It depends on the context. The Past Perfect suggests that your context will specify some event or time that came later. eg My friend called me at 6pm today to invite me to dinner.
