Question about sentences

Dear all,

I would like to know whether the following sentences have the same meaning.

She claims to have passed the examination.

She claims having passed the examination.

Thank you.

Top answer

[1] She claims to have passed the examination. [2] *She claims having passed the examination. [2] is ungrammatical because the gerund-participial clause here can’t satisfy the complement requirements of the verb "claim", which requires an infinitival clause as complement as in [1].

  • [1] She claims to have passed the examination.
  • [2] *She claims having passed the examination.
  • [2] is ungrammatical because the gerund-participial clause here can’t satisfy the complement requirements of the verb "claim", which requires an infinitival clause as complement as in [1].
