Question about sentences

Dear all,

I would like to know which of the following expressions is correct.

I stayed up until 3 am fight night studying him.

I stayed up until 3 am on fight night studying him.

The first one is an informal conversational form. The second is a "fuller" form. My feeling is that the first sentence would be more common in AmE than in BrE.
