Question about Reported Speech. Unit 7

Hi teachers,

Could I add to the explanation below, 'and the verb do as an auxiliary verb'? Is there anything else we remove?

When we change a sentence from Direct Speech to Reported Speech we always remove quotation marks, commas, question marks, and exclamation marks.

Thanks in advance

Hi, The whole explanation makes me uncomfortable. I can think of various cases where it is not true. eg Tom: I like apples , oranges and pears.

Hi,

Where did you get this explanation from? It's vague and inaccurate.

Hi Clive,

Thank you for your reply.

I don't really remember if the explanation was taken from a book or on the Internet.

What about this one, 'When we change a sentence from Direct Speech to Reported Speech we always remove quotation marks, question marks, and exclamation marks and the auxiliary verbs do, does, and did'.

Thanks,

Hi,

It's most likely to be taken from the Internet.

Why do you capitalize "reported / direct speech"?

Hi,

Mary thinks Tom does not like Coke.

Tom: I do like Coke!

Tom exclaimed that he did like Coke.

For no reason at all. I've just seen it in books. I guess i shouldn't, should I?

Hi Clive,

Ok, I see that the rule I've taken from the Internet doesn't work at all.

How about this one?

When an information question is reported it no longer has the word order of a question. There is no question mark and there are no quotations marks.

Be careful with do/does/did. Remember, a reported question has the word order of a stament, not a questi

Hi,

Then, don't capitalize it.
