Question about "in the distance"

Hi!

#a) "The Statue of Liberty could be seen in the distance"
#b) "The Statue of Liberty could be seen far in the distance"
#c) "In the distance, he could hear a dog barking"
#d) "In the distance, he could see a green hill"

1) Are the above sentences correct?
2) If they are actually correct, but sound too "formal" (or anything else), could anybody reword them in a different/more usual way?
3) If #c and #d are correct, is the comma after distance always required, or could I just say "In the distance he could hear/see..."?
4) Which is the usual/correct position for "In the distance" (at the beginning or at the end of the clause)?

Thank you very much for any help!
