Question about "Past Tense in a Statement"

"Communism is the final stage in which class dichotomies and the state itself ceased to exist."

I don't understand why the word cease is in its Past Tense. Is this like when in the conditional structure, if it is not true, then use "were"?

Top answer

akdom I don't understand why the word cease is in its Past Tense. Me neither. It must have something to do with the sentence(s) that preceded this one.
