Question about 'not really'

Hi teachers~~

One of my students asked me if 'not really' is the right answer for 'What's up or anything special going on?'

I said 'not much' is right but not 'not really.'

I am confused.

'Not really' sounds ok for 'anything going on' but not 'what's up.'

Thank you in advance.

Nobody would say "What's up or anything special going on?" If you mean two separate things, then you are right.

"What's up or anything special going on?" is not something we would normally ask. We might ask "What's up? Anything special going on?"
