Question about "Invitation" as a noun

Dear all,

The sentence is here: Thanks for the invitation.

May I know if the "invitation" is referring to an invitation letter/card or the action of invitation. Many thanks!

Dear Fivejedjon,

I guess it could mean either way depending on the context, right?
