Question about english tense

Hi:could you rephrase the following sentence
please?

"I should have thought maxim would have told you"

I just don't understand the use of tense. Is there" any simpler way of
expression? What's the point of using "would have" here?

Top answer

I should have thought Maxim would have told you = I thought (= should think) Maxim would tell you. The original sentence, by regressing the idea to a more hypothetical statement ( should —> should have; would —> would have ), becomes more polite and more formal.
