Question about definitions of growth

Words are like living creatures, usually changing in meaning say when or where they appear. So it is often quite difficult for me to interpret the real meaning of a word in a certain context. For example, if you say "The 'growth' of digital video has led to a tenfold increase in submissions since 1993, as it is now easier for new filmmakers to shoot and edit low budget movies," do you mean, especially on the definition of 'growth', it is 'development' or 'dissemination or popularization'? Or something else.
I'd be obliged if anybody should kindly teach me.
