Question about an article.

"This is bat country",

Is this sentence correct? shouldn't there be an article before "bat"? If not, tell me why. (This quotation comes from a Hunter S. Thompson book.)

Top answer

" "Bat" functions as an adjective, telling us what kind of country this is. "Country" is not used here as a political entity. I know that's confusing.

  • When we say, "This is a free country," we mean, for example, that The USA is a free country.
  • (whatever that means) If we say something like, "This is timber country," we're referring to a particular region --- perhaps only a portion of a single state.

Hello, I believe it's correct. The meaning/context would suggest which article, or no article, be used.
