Question about a sentence

Hello all!

I read a newspaper article this morning that contained the following sentence.

Is this sentence grammatically correct? For some reason, it doesn't sound quite right.

We can't say 'what have changed', and so 'what' must be singular in this context. Since 'what' is the subject of 'is', 'is' must be correct, even though 'eyes' is plural.

But I agree that this formation sounds strange.

If the writer of the sentence had specified how the Tigers' eyes had changed, the grammatical oddity might have disappeared, e.g.

(I'm struggling to guess the context.)

In perpetuum, frater - ave atque vale.
