Hi Teachers,

Could you tell me if 'several' is a synonym to 'a few' or it is more than 'a few'.

The Bible says (1 Peter 3:20, King James Version):

".... wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved...."

But few people consider 'few' as 8.

Not exactly. 'a few' is more restrictive; it often implies 'less than desired' or 'less than expected'. 'several' is more neutral, let's say.

That's probably why we say 'only a few', but rarely, if ever, say 'only several'.
