The grammar is fine, but 'a useful thing' is a rather limp phrase. Can you be more specific:

A morning walk in summer is healthy/invigorating/relaxing/a great pleasure/etc.

No. This is a very basic—and simple—rule that you must learn: The choice of article depends upon the initial SOUND of the following word, not the spelling. 'Useful' begins with / j /, not a vowel sound.
