Question

What's the difference between these two sentences?
1.Do you know where are we going?
2.Do you know where we are going.
Does the second sentence mean that the speaker knows where they are going and the first sentence mean that he is asking others?
Thanks

Top answer

Only the second sentence is correct. The speaker may or may not know where they are going. Some further context is needed to resolve this ambiguity.

1 is ungrammatical.

2 needs a question mark.

Change to:

1. 'Where are we going? Do you know?'

2. 'Do you know where we are going?'

'Does the second sentence mean that the speaker knows where they are going and the first sentence mean that he is asking others?'

Like in second sentence a person could say like this "do you know guys where we are going ? we are going to a really fun place. you have no idea how much fun we can have there."
So it clearly means he knows that place and is using the question just as exciting expression.

Like Ivanhr said - further context is necessary.

He could also say 'Do you know where we are going? I haven't got the faintest idea.'
