That's because I was very undereducated and I never paid attention in class and a lot of the times had my tutor do my homework...

A friend of mine spent a school year in UK and a shortened version of what he said to me after he came is that most of the teenagers in UK he had met didn't know much about grammar.

And I had a classmate from USA for a year. We had a homework for our English class and she couldn't help us beacuse she simply didn't know how to make it.

Linguists working in the field to understand a new language have a saying:

Never trust a native informant.

In other words, native speakers who have no special training and just happen to be speakers of a certain language have absolutely no idea how their own language (or any other) works. If you ask them to explain grammatical phenomena, they will just make things up that

I'd compare the usage of the native tongue to driving the car. You can be an excellent driver but at the same time your knowledge of the mechanical systems of the car, especially the engine, may be very poor. I would say that grammar is an engine of the language, so if you a non-native speaker, the best you can do is try to be familiar with the rules by which words combine into phrase
