Question

Our office is having a discussion regarding e-mails received. My colleague stated that he is getting e-mails that say: "Hi, Joe, how are you?"

He is wondering why people are using 2 commas surrounding the name. I vaguely remember being taught to put commas around a person's name.

Please enlighten us.

Hi, 'Two commas' is what I was taught, and have always considered correct. Today I sometimes see it the other way, probably because the general trend today seems to be to use fewer commas for a more 'uncluttered' look. Clive

1. Hi, Joe, how are you?

— Consider the natural intonation here: your voice probably dips and pauses slightly, both before and after "Joe". The commas indicate these slight pauses.

2. Hi Joe, where are you going with that pizza in your hand?
