Question

Is "at all" necessary in this sentence?

I wish that I you hadn't done that at all.

Top answer

You have a typo ("I you"). "at all" adds emphasis but does not change the meaning. The sentence would work without it.

  • Edit: Sorry, it occurred to me later that "at all" may contribute to the meaning if a thing can be done to varying degrees and the amount to which it is done (or not done) is being highlighted.
  • For example: A: I wish you hadn't done that for so long.
