Question

Hi

How many friends came to your party?

Who told you that?

--- I'd like to ask why don't we have to use "did" in these questions (How many friends did come to your party?, Who did tell you that?). Is it because there's a subject and a pronoun in the question (How many friends AND Who)?

You're on the right track! If an interrogative word (how, who) is the subject or a part of the subject, do, does, did isn't used. But: How many friends did y ou invite to your party?

Why is that so in this case?

And what about "Who did you see?" Instead of "Who saw you?"

As I said, the interrogative word has to be the subject for do to be omitted. If some other word is the subject, do is used.
