Obviously you are confused with "compliment" and "complement". If you are not sure of the meaning of the words but try to use it, it might not help your career and the relationship with your boss. On the contrary, it could have the opposite effects. The compliment you referred to means to praise or say something nice to please some body. Complement is something

Actually, culture will vary a lot.

If I said something to my boss about how much I esteem him and how vastly superior his knowledge and ability is than mine, he'd think I making fun of him (or that I wanted to borrow $10). Most Americans have a much more casual relationships with their bosses.
