If you still don't have an answer from the University of Iowa, why ..... call the admissions office?

(a) you don't

(b) not to

(c) not

(d) don't

Top answer

why don't you call the admissions office is the underlying clause. You can't take out just the you and leave the don't without a subject. The alternative is to use the idiom why not , which takes a bare infinitive.
