Query regarding the usage of Grammar

Please look at this sentence that I wrote.

" This is to certify that Mr. Lokesh Kumar studying First year Mechanical Engineering in Shanmugha Engineering college has been selected for the award of merit scholarship ........".

But one of my friends say that it should be "studying in First year Mechanical Engineering in Shanmugha Engineering college ...".

Please help me with correct usage and justification

It could be either way, but I suggest that the sentence should read like this: This is to certify that Mr. Lokesh Kumar , a first-year student in Mechanical Engineering at Shanmugha Engineering College, has been selected for the Award of Merit scholarship.
