Quarter

Hi,

".... I wanted to buy a birthday present for my mother. He showed me everything in his store that could be had for a quarter."

What does the italicized part mean?

Does it refer to the discounted goods at the store?

Regards,

Iman

could be had for a quarter = could be purchased for 25 cents (or less). There is no suggestion of discounts, but the story is obviously set many years ago!

Thank you Mistre Micawber.Yes it's an old story in which the girl had just 5 nickels.

Is that amount tantamount to 25 cents?

Thank you in advance,

Iman
