quarried/mined out ten tons of marble

The workers quarried out ten tons of marble from the side of the mountain in one week.

Hi,
Does the above sound good? Is "quarried out" interchangeable with "mined/excavated?" Thanks.

Top answer

No. Quarrying is different from mining ( tunneling out ores, minerals, metals) or excavating ( emptying or uncovering ruins, cellars, catacombs).

Thanks, Mister.

To make sure, does "quarried" only refer to "dug out rock/marble?"

Quarrying is extricating portions of what is essentially a solid deposit of rock, etc.-- generally just 'cutting off pieces' of it.
