Quantifiers (few,each)

Hi there! The excerpt below is from "English grammar in context" by M.Vince. Could you explain why some of the choices are wrong?
''h.Only ____ people came to see the play on the first night.''
(Options: few, quite a few, a very small number of. 'Few' is not considered to be the right answer. Why?)
''i.I tried ____ house in the street, but nobody had heard of Mrs Salkeld.''
(Options: each, rather a lot of, every. 'Each' is not considered to be the right answer. Why?)
