Can both be used?

They qualified me for the military. Or

They approved me for the military.

The first sounds odd to me. 'I qualified' sounds better. Neither of them sounds quite right, but it has been so long since I had my examination for the military that I have forgotten the term they used.

On the other hand, verb choice probably depends on whether it is
