Q9: 'I thought that...' and 'I was under the impression that...' (What's the difference between them, teachers)

Emotion: smile ....Hi there teachers,

Would you please tell me the difference between "I thought that..." and "I was under the impression that..."?

Here is a pair of sentences:

1a. I thought that you were in London.

b. I was under the impression that you were in London.

Do they both convey the same meaning or is there a difference in the meaning, please?

Thank you.
