PUTTING OUT IN THE COLD

Hi,
I would like to know the meaning of this expression here:

'Around that time I was hallucinating about someone being there in the house. So I was looking in closets, under beds, and I remember now PUTTING everyone IN THE COLD.'
Thanks in advance, Jo.
