Putting Comma Before And

I always see articles with a comma before "and" and its not on a list. For example, I found this in an article,

"Locker's accuracy was as big of an issue as it's been in his pro career to date, and he got nothing going positively for an inept offense until garbage time of the 55-7 defeat."

Why is there an and before the comma?

The comma separates two independent clauses, thus:

But when it's only a compound predicate, there's no

The comma makes it easier for the reader to quickly see the structure of the sentence, and thus to understand its meaning. In such long complex-compound sentences, a comma is not unusual.
