Putting a damper on the mood

Hi teachers. Can I use "putting a damper on the mood" here?

A woman suddenly pulled out a gun and fired it in celebration, but the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling and hit a guy in the head. The guy dropped dead, putting a damper on the mood. The room went silent. But then a man shouted "Cheers!"
