Put/had put

I saw that there was only one clean glass left. My father had put/ put most of them in the dishwasher, so I got that one despite its small size.

Can both tenses work here? (My father put the glasses in the dishwasher before I saw there was only one clean one). So with that in mind, is the past simple possible? Thank you.

Necrophagist Can both tenses work here? Yes. " because that occurred before you saw that there was only one clean one left (and there is no 'before' or 'after' in the passage to clarify this).

Yes. I'd say "My father had put ..." because that occurred before you saw that there was only one clean one left (and there is no 'before' or 'after' in the passage to clarify this).
