Putative & Reputed

due to their meanings, can putative and purported be used interchangeably?

for example the putative cause of a problem or purported cause of the problem!?

Top answer

Not really. Putative implies that there is a general agreement of opinion about the claim. Purported is less certain - there is a claim, but it is not proven, and might not have general agreement.
