Put through the wringer

Hi,

Could you tell me if there's a synonym for 'put through the wringer'?

"My dad spent so much time and energy on this project. It really put him through the wringer when it went south."

I'm looking for something that's a bit more common than this phrase. (something like 'deal a blow to' but different)

Thank you.
