Grammar

Put the definite article or not?

Hi. Please help.

I think many people emphasized the importance of using your rest time (those in-between hours) to upgrade your skill levels (roughly speaking), and I think Thomas Edison might have said something about that or something roughly to that effect (all guessing - absolutely not sure).

Could someone write this to imply a similar thought (for students in a classroom environment)? This is written to ask grammar questions with no content in mind.

Most of learning takes place during non-classroom hours.

Could it be this too?

Most of learning takes place during the non-classroom hours.

I think this is wrong.

Most of the learning takes place during the non-classroom hours.

How about these? Which is correct?

1. Fish live in water.

2. Fish live in the water.

1. Most of the activity occurs in winter.

2. Most of the activity occurs in the winter.
