Is it "to put something in the fridge" or "to put something into the fridge"?

It depends. What is the complete sentence and context?

'in' so frequently substitutes for 'into' that you can usually safely use either one with 'put'. I don't think I ever say that I put something into the fridge. I always say 'in'.

According to Google Ngrams "put it in the fridge" occurs about 12 times more often than "put it into the fridge".
