Can I say,

(a) John washed the dog's wound with an antiseptic.

(b) John washed the dog's wound and put some antiseptic on its leg. After that, he bandaged its leg by using the gauze.

Sentence A implies that you do not know, or do not want to mention, the kind of antiseptic.

In Sentence B, the last clause is awkward: perhaps it would be better to say "...its leg with some gauze".
