Put out feelers

Can anybody please give me a sample dialog or situation in which somebody is putting out feelers? The dictionary definition is a bit ambiguous.

Here is an example from the news:- Al Gore is putting out feelers for how he should act during the Senate trial of President Clinton. In a dialogue:- Do you know anyone who would be suitable for the job vacancy? No but I can put out feelers with my friends in the industry.
