"put on punishment"

Hey there,

I want to know if in english it sounds correct to say ' I was put on punishment by my mom'. I've been looking up all the dictionaries and everywhere else on the internet and I found no collocation such this. I found it only in the american corpus and I was wondering if it's right or not!

I'm in the US and I've heard this usage before. It is a more official-sounding way of saying "punished" and is usually used in the context of school or the military. For example:

At school I was put on punishment for texting during class.

The sergeant put me on punishment for fighting and I've got to stand extra guard duty.
