put my collar on backwards

Could somebody help me, please with this sentence? "I have put my collar on backwards many a day, in many a yesteryear." My question is about what mean " put my collar on backwards"

Top answer

Many, many years ago, collars were not attached to a man's shirt. They were an item that had to be fastened separately. It was easy to put them on backwards if you were not paying attention.
