Put it / them on backwards

Hi teachers,

You have put the shoes backwards, does that mean left shoes on the right foot, and right on the left?

Thank you.

Hi Mister Micawber,

Thank you for your help.

If someone by mistake has one slipper on one foot, and one of the dress shoes on the other foot. Would "you have put the shoes on backwards " be correct to describe it also?

Hi guys,

In my idiolect, I wouldn't use 'backwards' for the 'left on right, right on left' situation.

I've always said (and heard) 'You have put your shoes on the wrong feet'.

Dear Clive,

for the word 'backwards', is it used for describing clothes only? that's what I know so far.. Do we have any other things that can use the word 'backwards'?

thanks,

Mei

I think I would say " you've put your shoes on the wrong foot " which I actually did have the pleasure of seeing on a drucken co-worker years ago.
But given the context, most people would guess the meaning. That's my thought.
