Put in hand

What is the meaning of put in hand in this line: Without research instruments, data would be impossible to be put in hand?

Thank you

To me this does not seem like natural phrasing. Do you know whether it was written by a native English speaker? It may be a non-native attempt at saying "impossible to obtain".

You are right. It's written by my friend's lecturer who is not an English native speaker. Actually the original line is like this "Without them (research instruments), data would be impossible to put in hand. I just added "be" before put...But I think it's the same, right? The original and my adding "be" before put are not natural. Could you give me an example of using the phrase "put in hand"?

It's not a natural phrase for native speakers. "have at/on hand" is.

I see. Thank you. Then...I wonder where the lecturer got that phrase from Emotion: thinking

Thanks again.
