Tori ran after the viking and put him to the sword. The viking gasped seeing the sword sticking out of his stomach. Tori watched him die, then pulled the sword out of him and left.

1) Can I use "put him to the sword" here or can it only be used if the viking had died instantly?

2) Is the paragraph grammatical and natural?
