In the past, people who suffered from schizophrenia were often put away. 

However, I thought I heard "put away" as putting something out of reach. Does that have this meaning too? If it doesn't could you guess what were (is it a correct conditional?) that phrasal verb that sounds familiar in my mind with "away" in it?  What other meaning does it have?
