Not wanting to do the job twice, I put all my eggs in a steaming basket this morning, then filled the pot with water to make sure none of them floated. I had only half-trusted the notion that eggs sold at room temperature should be kept at room temperature, but my experience with these week-old eggs lends some support to it. Anyway, I then removed the basket and put the pot on the hob. Before the water came to a boil, I replaced the basket and started slowly lowering the eggs, one by one, into the water.
I hate it when a hardboiled egg cracks prematurely. None did. I stood by for the 12 minutes of slow boiling I prefer for eggs to make sure the boil didn't become rapid or slow down to nothing. One can't just walk away in such situations, assuming everything will turn out all right. At the appropriate time, I filled the pot will cold water, letting the water run for a few minutes so the eggs would become good and cold. The eggs turned out perfectly, leading me to believe it may be all right to put all your eggs into one basket after all, assuming due care is given. To forestall time-consuming wisecracks from the readership, Coop needn't tell us again he can't cook, the women needn't describe the female problems chickens have, and the Evan and Donna myth-busting team needn't tell us that the misfortune avoided by following the advice 'Don't put all your eggs into one basket' is a well-known urban myth, since most of us already knew that.
