Pushed herself academically, socially ...

Hi

Throughout high school, Geeta pushed herself academically and socially. She also belonged
to leadership groups, edited the school paper and yearbook, and was class president both her junior and senior years.

1. Does it mean she worked hard to get good grades? However I'm not sure what the word "socially" means here?

2. Does "leadership groups" mean that she was a member of some groups at school which were in charge of something?

Yes, but I think it also encompasses more than just getting good grades. Participating in various contests, publishing scientific papers, giving presentations at seminars all come to mind. 2.
