Push a pea

"All Gibson has done is just to push the pea slightly further uphill with his nose.”

Just a guess. There are stories in mythology of characters who had to roll a heavy stone up a hill, only to lose it and need to start all over. The pea with the nose could be the same story, only more frustrating and with even less import.
